[Rewind, Replay]
Northumbria University's Moving Image, Popular Media and Culture research group, in association with the BAFTSS British Cinema and Television Special Interest Group (SIG), warmly invites you to an event celebrating the publication of Johnny Walker's new book, Rewind, Replay: Britain and the Video Boom, 1978-92<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fedinburghuniversitypress.com%2Fbook-rewind-replay.html&data=05%7C01%7Cjohnny.walker%40NORTHUMBRIA.AC.UK%7Ceeab5526a9734947c33808da3fc4adf6%7Ce757cfdd1f354457af8f7c9c6b1437e3%7C0%7C0%7C637892411479832073%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=%2FpR9gSV2nKXdeQtjjhYOAIt2qBOoOS6WpIVN579HeK8%3D&reserved=0> (Edinburgh University Press).
Join Johnny Walker and British film and video scholar Kate Egan (author of Trash or Treasure? Censorship and the Changing Meanings of the Video Nasties) as they discuss the book’s key themes, including the context that gave birth to the first video distributors and video rental shops, the tumultuous ‘video nasties’ panic, the high-street penetration of low-cost video entertainment, the arrival of the US behemoth Blockbuster, and more.
The event is free to attend and will last approximately 1 hour. Audience members will be given an opportunity to ask questions.
The book is now available to pre-order. For 30% off the RRP (£19.99 £13.99), order the book direct from the publisher quoting ‘NEW30’ at the check-out: http://edinburghuniversitypress.com<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fedinburghuniversitypress.com%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cjohnny.walker%40NORTHUMBRIA.AC.UK%7Ceeab5526a9734947c33808da3fc4adf6%7Ce757cfdd1f354457af8f7c9c6b1437e3%7C0%7C0%7C637892411479832073%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=k%2BEzhfK4BAcy3dfne0vz2y7TpWQpy33ze2V0jndABDI%3D&reserved=0>.
Praise for Rewind, Replay:
* "Walker authoritatively chronicles the formative years of the home video boom in Britain. By tracing the distributors, shops and clubs that brought video into UK homes, he identifies the conditions that enabled popular uptake of a new entertainment technology. In so doing, Walker provides us with essential coordinates for grasping the full significance of this transitional period in the history of screen media in Britain." Paul McDonald, King's College London
* "In Rewind, Replay, Johnny Walker traces with exemplary clarity and copious detail the evolution of video distribution and retail in Britain from 1978 to 1992. A great deal has been written about ‘video nasties’ but far less about the industry in which they, and many other kinds of videos, circulated. This is a much-needed and very welcome addition to the literature on the early days of video in the UK." Julian Petley, Brunel University
* "Rewind, Replay is a formidable addition to an important and growing body of scholarship establishing home video as a prelude to the digitalization of life. Walker shows how marketing and distribution of analogue video folded ‘cinema’ into a swathe of other activities. He does so with skill and depth." Frederick Wasser, Brooklyn College CUNY
Thanks everyone.
Best wishes
Johnny
