Scarecrow Video is proud to, once again, partner with film critic Robert Horton for his latest Scarecrow Academy Event, an online multimedia presentation celebrating the work of Nicolas Cage.

Nicolas Cage has had multiple career re-sets, but playing "Nicolas Cage" in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is surely one of his greatest. This Scarecrow Zeitgeist 22! event will celebrate an acting life that defies conventional wisdom or common sense, from the zany expressionism of Raising Arizona and Vampire's Kiss to the leading man of Moonstruck to his recent head-spinning run of inspired maximalism (Mandy), inspired minimalism (Pig), and work-for-hire to pay his debts. When he won an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas, Cage declared, "I know it's not hip to say it, but I just love acting." Let us count the ways.

What started as a few hundred VHS tapes offered for rent in the back of a Seattle record store has grown over the past 30+ years into one of the most significant archives of film and television on Earth...and at 140,000+ titles, the largest one fully accessible to the public. Realizing the special attention a collection of this size and scope required, the caretakers of Scarecrow Video formed a non-profit in 2014 to steward and preserve it. That move provided new opportunities to use the collection for free community outreach programs, including special events for older adults in senior centers, arts education through a weekly Children's Hour, family-friendly outdoor movies, and a full-slate of lectures, screenings, and events online and in Scarecrow’s screening room.

About Robert Horton
Robert Horton is a member of the National Society of Film Critics and the longtime film critic for the Everett Herald and Seattle Weekly. He is a regular contributor to Film Comment magazine, and the author of Frankenstein (Columbia University Press) and Billy Wilder: Interviews (U. Press of Mississippi). He has been a Fulbright Specialist, an adjunct professor at Seattle University, the curator of the “Magic Lantern” film program at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, and a speaker with Smithsonian Journeys.
