Fellini and neorealism

Since _Nights of Cabiria_ is back in the theaters (in
superb new prints), it seems right to ask, vis-a-vis this
question, whether _Cabiria_ fits or not in Monti's
definition. Perhaps Fellini has one foot in neorealism--and
the other on a banana surrealism--I mean "peel."
I wonder also what distinctive role religion plays in
Italian neorealism, since it's not mentioned explicitly in
Monti's (albeit brief) definition.

Yours,
Edward R. O'Neill
