A few suggestions:

start with THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY, which has some pretty brutal scenes
(passenger shot in cold blood, engineer beaten and thrown from train,
etc.)

Griffith's INTOLERANCE (even more than BIRTH OF A NATION), which
features body parts getting lopped off in the siege of Babylon and a
violent strike (patterned after the Homestead steel strike).
