I was reading the Howard Hawks section in Wollen's SIGNS AND MEANINGS
(1969)the other day, then I picked up Lee Russell's NEW LEFT REVIEW 1964
article on Hawks, and noticed not just Wollen's stealing of ideas, as the
postscript from HOWARD HAWKS, AMERICAN ARTIST (co-edited by Wollen),
suggests, but blatant, word-for-word plagiarism for paragraphs at a time.
Has much been made of this plagiarism anywhere? Can anyone refer me to any
examples of Wollen's defense of his "theft"? Thanks in advance.
