Peter Hughes asked:

"1. Can anyone suggest a clear statement of what they think they are
fundamental values and expectations in western humanities academic work?

2. How have people sought to raise such values for debate with students
from a different cultural background?

3. What do people take to be meant by the term 'critical enquiry',
especially when allied to the term 'detached'?"

Questions 1 and 3 are answered directly by Jacques Barzun and Henry F.
Graff in their book "The Modern Researcher" (now in it's 5th edition, I
think). This is a standard reference, entertainingly written, that offers
insights--practical and theoretical--into performing and understanding
traditional scholarly research and writing. As for question 2, you're on
your own; but a discussion of this book seems like a good place to start.

Good luck,
Brigham Narins
