Questions 1 and 3 are answered directly by Jacques Barzun and Henry F.
Graff in their book "The Modern Researcher" (now in it's 5th edition, I
think). This is a standard reference, entertainingly written, that offers
insights--practical and theoretical--into performing and understanding
traditional scholarly research and writing. As for question 2, you're on
your own; but a discussion of this book seems like a good place to start.
