Two Australian prison films you may consider are 'Stir' and 'Ghosts...of
The Civil Dead'. The script of 'Stir' was written by an ex-prisoner and
is based on a riot at Bathurst jail in NSW. The 'Ghosts...of the Civil
Dead' is graphical violent and, like the first film, highlights the
barbarity of prison life.
'Journey Among Women' (1977) and 'For the Term of His Natural Life'(1927)
are also interesting as 'prison' films, given that European settlement in
Australia began as a penal colony where convicts were confined more by the
landscape, than prison walls as such.

Subject: Prison Films?
Hi-- I'm in the early phase of a thesis on the spectacle of punishment
and how it has been re-introduced into our society in the form of the
prison film. I'm trying to get a list of films together, but I'm having
problems locating films available on video. Any suggestions? I'm looking
for any film that takes place primarily in prison -- the most obvious,
recent example that I don't plan on using in my paper is "The Shawshank
Redemption," for example.... I'd appreciate any and all suggestions.
Thanks.
