Society for Cinema Studies Meeting, Ottawa, Ontario Canada. May 15-18 1997.
 
Violence and the Remains of Postmodernity
 
Papers for this panel should explore the uses of violence within media
representation as strategies for relegitimating patriarchal myth and the
reactionary ideological turn of postmodernity. A variety of contemporary films
(Seven, Braveheart, Casino, Heat )   seem aware of the bankruptcy of
patriarchal/capitalist culture in the postmodern milieu, but nevertheless use
violence and the ideological assumptions underneath it to regenerate this
culture. Papers may also address films that seem to offer a strategy of
resistance (e.g. The Doom Generation, The Addiction ).   Brief  (150-200 word)
abstracts should be sent  no later than Aug. 31 to:
