Author: Christopher Sharrett <[log in to unmask]> at smtp-link Date: 6/27/96 3:40 PM Call For Papers: Society for Cinema Studies Meeting, Ottawa, Ontario Canada. May 15-18 1997. Violence and the Remains of Postmodernity Papers for this panel should explore the uses of violence within media representation as strategies for relegitimating patriarchal myth and the reactionary ideological turn of postmodernity. A variety of contemporary films (Seven, Braveheart, Casino, Heat ) seem aware of the bankruptcy of patriarchal/capitalist culture in the postmodern milieu, but nevertheless use violence and the ideological assumptions underneath it to regenerate this culture. Papers may also address films that seem to offer a strategy of resistance (e.g. The Doom Generation, The Addiction ). Brief (150-200 word) abstracts should be sent no later than Aug. 31 to: Christopher Sharrett Department of Communication Seton Hall University South Orange, NJ 07079 [log in to unmask] 201-761-9000, ex. 5216 (voice mail) ---- To signoff SCREEN-L, e-mail [log in to unmask] and put SIGNOFF SCREEN-L in the message.
