Some time ago, the late film historian, Gerald Mast, who
was a child actor and played a little role in "Spartacus,"
told me that in fact Mann directed most of the film and
Kubrick was brought in fairly late.

Dear Dana

'Spartacus' was originally to be directed by Anthony Mann, who did shoot
the opening sequence. There are various references to the script background
in his biography.
