Let's not forget Paul Verhoeven's THE FOURTH MAN (1979), made before he
was corrupted by Hollywood's big budgets: see, for example, the fairly
silly action action action flic TOTAL RECALL and the even sillier BASIC
INSTINCT.
Bunuel's DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE (1973) [or just about anything
else by Bunuel].
Istvan Szabo's MEPHISTO.
David Mamet's OLEANNA (1995), or HOMOCIDE or
HOUSE OF GAMES.
David Lynch's BLUE VELVET (1986) or ERASERHEAD or [some episodes of] TWIN
PEAKS (especially from among the first 9) or WILD AT HEART or (more
recently) LOST HIGHWAY (1997).
Georg Roy Hill's SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE (1972), a film which quite literally
bent the mind of a friend of mine.
David Cronenberg's VIDEODROME (1982), as has been mentioned, or DAED
RINGERS (1988) or more recently CRASH.
And of course, quintessentially, Kubrick's 2201: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968),
CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1972) and FULL METAL JACKET (1987).
Anyway, this thread may be getting a little frayed, so that it for now.
Cheers,
Marty.
