CINE ACCION PRESENTS THE
THIRD ANNUAL FILM FESTIVAL !CINE LATINO!
Festival Includes Bay Area Premieres of Six Latin American Feature Films
Thursday, September 21 through Sunday, September 24, 1995
Victoria Theater, 2961-16th Street (at Mission), San Francisco
 
Cine Accion, the Bay Area's premiere presenter of Latino cinema, has
announced the lineup for the Third Annual Festival !Cine Latino! showcasing
recent films and videos from throughout Latin America.  Festival screenings
take place from Thursday, September 21 through Sunday, September 24, 1995, at
the Victoria Theater (2961-16th Street at Mission, San Francisco).
 
The Bay Area's only annual film festival devoted to Latino images and issues,
Cine Accion's Festival !Cine Latino! has established itself as the primary
Latino media arts event in Northern California.  This year's Third Annual
Festival presents an exciting collection of recent films and videos, from
experimental video poems and award-winning short student films to the Bay Area
Premieres of six feature films by acclaimed directors from throughout Latin
America.
 
Opening Night Programs, September 21
Festival !Cine Latino! begins on Thursday, September 21 with a champagne
reception at 6pm at the Victoria Theater.  The Victoria's curtain opens at
8pm for the screening of Regador (1994, USA, 10 min.), a brief tribute to
workers in el campo, followed by the Bay Area Premiere of Chilean director
Luis R. Vera's feature film Miss Amerigua (1994, Paraguay, 93 min.), the
story of the first beauty pageant in the tiny Paraguayan village of Amerigua
after the fall of a repressive dictatorship. Opening Night screenings
continue at 10:15pm with the short Historia Minima de Una Seduccion (1993,
Mexico, 8 min.), followed by the Bay Area Premiere of the Guatemalan feature
film El Silencio de Neto (Neto's Silence; 1994, Guatemala, 106 min.),
selected as the official Guatemalan entry in the Best Foreign Film category
of the Academy Awards.  In his directorial debut, Luis Argueta relates the
story of the coming of age of a Guatemalan boy as his country's
democratically-elected government is over-thrown in a CIA-sponsored invasion.

special programs and feature film presentations:

5:45pm Indigenous Voices - Cine Accion and the South & Meso American Indian
Information Center (SAIIC) present three recent documentaries on indigenous
communities in the Americas:  Una Sola Vez (1995, Argentina, 22 min.); Tepu
(1994, Mexico, 27 min.); Mayan Voices: American Lives (1994, USA, 55:36 min.)
 
8pm !Noche Mexicana! - The Bay Area Premiere of Gabriel Retes' feature film
Bienvenido/Welcome (1994, Mexico, 102 min.), an unpredictable, comic
film-within-a-film that follows the story of Maria, a painter, and Jose, an
antique books scholar, as they confront the possibility that Jose may have
contracted AIDS through an infidelity.
 
10:15pm Celebrating Independent Filmmaking in the Americas - Cine Accion and
the Film Arts Foundation present the short, fast-paced thriller No Cover
(1993, USA, 10 min.), and the Bay Area Premiere of Guillermo Escalon's
full-length documentary Alejandro  (1994, El Salvador, 110 min.), about the
life experiences and cinematic dreams of Alejandro Cotto, who believes that
he can still be a great filmmaker, in spite of the near impossibility of
making films in his poor, war-torn Central American country.
 
Saturday, September 23
11am  Teens Speak Out - Exciting films and videos by, about, and for Latino

complexities of identity in North America, presented by Cine Accion and NAATA
(National Asian American Telecommunications Association).  Displaced in the

8pm  Guatemalan Feature Film!  The Bay Area Premiere of La Hija del Puma
 (The Daughter of the Puma; 1994, Guatemala/Denmark, 101 min.).  Based on a
true story, the film follows Aschlop, a young indigenous woman, as she
secretly returns to Guatemala from a refugee camp in Chiapas in search of her
brother, accompanied by her protector and spiritual guardian Puma.
 
10:15pm  Adventures in Fronterilandia - Engaging and experimental works on
the Border Region and border culture.  Border Swings/Vaivenes Fronterizos
(1994, USA, 8 min.); Distant Relations (1994, USA, 17 min.); Fronterilandia

12pm  Protest and Resistance!  Must-see documentaries on current political

4:45pm Just Another Day in La Ciudad!   Diverse points of view of life in the
city, presented with Bay Area Multicultural Telecommunications Association.

Carlos Diegues, one of the founders of Brazil's Cinema Novo movement.  Vea
Esta Cancion (Look at this Song; 1994, Brazil, 104 min.) pays tribute to the
composers and performers of Brazilian popular music through the dramatization
of four popular Brazilian songs.
 
9:15pm   Everyday Art!  Cine Accion and La Pena Cultural Center present three
films on dance, music, and art in the Americas.  Una Lucha Por Mi Pueblo
(1990, USA, 17 min.); Caetano In Bahia (1994, USA, 28:31 min.); Everyday Art
(1994, USA, 50 min.)
 
Tickets and Information
Tickets for the Opening Night Gala champagne reception (6pm) and screening of
Miss Amerigua (8pm) are $15 general/$13 Cine Accion members, seniors,
students, and disabled (screening only $7/$6).  Tickets for all other
festival programs are $7 general/$6 Cine Accion members, seniors, students,
and disabled.  Tickets go on sale September 1 at all Bay Area BASS Ticket
Centers, including the Wherehouse and Tower Records/Video, or by phone at
