Festival screenings take place from Thursday, September 21 through Sunday, September 24, 1995, at the Victoria Theater (2961-16th Street at Mission, San Francisco). The Bay Area's only annual film festival devoted to Latino images and issues, Cine Accion's Festival !Cine Latino! has established itself as the primary Latino media arts event in Northern California. This year's Third Annual Festival presents an exciting collection of recent films and videos, from experimental video poems and award-winning short student films to the Bay Area Premieres of six feature films by acclaimed directors from throughout Latin America. Opening Night Programs, September 21 Festival !Cine Latino! begins on Thursday, September 21 with a champagne reception at 6pm at the Victoria Theater. The Victoria's curtain opens at 8pm for the screening of Regador (1994, USA, 10 min.), a brief tribute to workers in el campo, followed by the Bay Area Premiere of Chilean director Luis R. Vera's feature film Miss Amerigua (1994, Paraguay, 93 min.), the story of the first beauty pageant in the tiny Paraguayan village of Amerigua after the fall of a repressive dictatorship. Opening Night screenings continue at 10:15pm with the short Historia Minima de Una Seduccion (1993, Mexico, 8 min.), followed by the Bay Area Premiere of the Guatemalan feature film El Silencio de Neto (Neto's Silence; 1994, Guatemala, 106 min.), selected as the official Guatemalan entry in the Best Foreign Film category of the Academy Awards. In his directorial debut, Luis Argueta relates the story of the coming of age of a Guatemalan boy as his country's democratically-elected government is over-thrown in a CIA-sponsored invasion.
