I recommend that you look at this filmmaker's work. She deals
with many issues that you are working on. If you can extend the
friendship issue into family relationships--specifically sisters, Von
Trotta would be an ideal case study. Check out her filmmography. Thse
two are specifically about female friendship.
Also, *Girlfriends* (1977), Claudia Weill
I am not recommending *Desert Hearts* because, though an
independent film, you said that you were not interested in Hollywood and
the film throws the worst Hollywood signifiers at its spectators. When I
taught it in my Feminist Film Theory class, I had to change the title of
the seminar from Lesbian Cinema to Lesbians onscreen.
