*Sheer Madness* (1983), Margarethe Von Trotta *The African Woman* (1990), Margarethe Von Trotta. I recommend that you look at this filmmaker's work. She deals with many issues that you are working on. If you can extend the friendship issue into family relationships--specifically sisters, Von Trotta would be an ideal case study. Check out her filmmography. Thse two are specifically about female friendship. Also, *Girlfriends* (1977), Claudia Weill I am not recommending *Desert Hearts* because, though an independent film, you said that you were not interested in Hollywood and the film throws the worst Hollywood signifiers at its spectators. When I taught it in my Feminist Film Theory class, I had to change the title of the seminar from Lesbian Cinema to Lesbians onscreen.
