Dear listmembers,
Stan Brakhage died this afternoon, Sunday, March 9th, in Victoria, British Columbia.
He died in hospital, where he had been recovering from an infection, following a sudden turn for the worse yesterday. Marilyn Brakhage was with him. Yesterday he told her: "I've had a wonderful life. Life is great."

Stan Brakhage was my teacher for a brief period. His creativity and articulation of visual language was extremely stimulating . He was an excellent lecturer and inspired us profoundly. A young colleague of Maya Deren, he was both friend and devil's advocate. He believed religion destroyed the artist and claimed that he was one of the few that understood her later work after going to Haiti. Later in 2000 he made an homage to Deren in 'Water For Maya', honoring her love of water, and all "Mayan liquidity in magic conjunction, reflection, etc." His and abstract vision was exemplied in hundreds of films and he made his mark captivating audiences spoon fed on narratives and documentaries. Stan Brakhage truly stretched the possibilities of the seventh art exponentially.
