I watched part of The Birds this weekend and noticed an interesting negotiation of the 180 degree rule that relates to the recent discussion. It's the scene in the bar/restaurant right before things begin to blow up. The shots start on one side of the "line" and then sort of dance along it for a while before ending up on the other side. An efficient way to cross the line without violating the rule (though realizing those are all contingent terms; David Bordwell's recent book on Hong Kong films has an interesting discussion of how HK editing usually breaks the action in different ways than American).
