I too was disappointed in Frankenstein.  I think your comments relevant.
Branaugh did make many changes to the original story, and I want to think
through those.  Also I think he just didn't take enough time to edit the
seams out.  I believe he may have been trying to change the focus of the
story to show Frankenstein desire to "restore" life, rather than "create"
life.  But I don't think he was as successful as Coppola was with
Dracula (changing the focus to looking for love).
 
Well, we can just all look forward to Interview with a Vampire this week.
Maybe it will surprize us.
