Joe Natale asks about collections in Los Angeles libraries and seeks
information about the American Film Institute.
The AFI is a long story, but information about its activities and the
state of its library can be obtained from:
American Film Institute
P.O. Box 27999
Los Angeles, CA 90027
Tel:(213) 856-7600
Fax:(213) 467-4578
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has an excellent library
and exceedingly knowledgeable library staff. I don't have their numbers
at hand, but the information operator for West Los Angeles (area code
310) can supply the phone number.
The UCLA library is also quite good. There is a way of accessing the UC
system's MELVYL computer library catalog via telnet, which can save lots
of time. Your local library computer maven can probably give you
specifics of how to do it from your system.
The headquarters of the American Society of Cinematographers has a
splendid museum of cinematography and they are most helpful. My
recollection is that they are down the street from Musso & Frank's
Restaurant in Hollywood, which is a splendid historical artifact. I
believe that the relevant area code is 213.
