Years ago, when double-features were in vogue, " Previews of Coming
Attractions" were screened after the "A" feature of the double bill.

In other words they trailed the film.

Hence the word "trailer", which was coined by theater managers and
projectionists when arranging the order of the various features, newsreels,
cartoons, travelogues, etc. which were to be screened on that day's
program.

It has no esoteric meaning whatsoever. It's just theater jargon that stuck!
