Of course one of the classic sociological studies of "total
institutions"--those in which individuals live but in which they have quite
limited control over their circumstances and in which they are 'cared for'
by others--is Erving Goffman's *Asylums: Essays on the Social Situation of
Mental Patients and Other Inmates.*
I am not sure why a keyword search through any good-sized library's
database for the word "asylum" would not have turned up this title, whereas
it would have turned up the references to "some Foucault" and "some
Nietzsche" which the original posting mentioned--unless the author of that
posting never made such a search.
Further, a search through the plot summaries of the database located
at http://us.imdb.com/search returned quite a sizeable number of listings:
by the time I hit stop, there were 150-plus titles, and they still only
reached the letter "C."
I am not sure why a keyword search through any of the internet's
many movie databases for the word "prison" would not have turned up more
titles than those mentioned on the original posting--unless the author of
that posting never made such a search.
