Some other suggestions (via a friend) 'The Blue Dahlia' written by Raymond
Chandler and starring Alan Ladd, Directed by George Marshall. 'This Gun for
Hire' starring Alan Ladd and directed by Frank Tuttle. My friend also
commented that he thinks 'Somewhere in the Night' could have been the first
film in which the cop throws his badge and gun down on the table.
Happy hunting
Felicity Coombs
