It's probably an obvious suggestion, but there was quite an extensive
series of films and television programs based on the Tarzan books.
These probably date back as far as the 30s and were made into the 70s.
 There is also a new Tarzan series on American television.
 
For an analysis of the early Tarzan "phenomenon" and its implications for
"modern" culture, as well as for a sense of the number of films about,
you might consult  the book _Gone Primitive_ by Mariana Torgovnick
(sp?).
