CFP: CINEMA AND THE POSTMETROPOLIS
Submissions are sought for a panel entitled _Cinema and the
Postmetropolis_ at the 2009 Society for Cinema and Media Studies
Conference in Tokyo, Japan (May 21-24, 2009).
Urban geographer Edward Soja has developed the term postmetropolis to
describe the future-oriented urbanism of the late capitalist age of
globalization. From the fractal city to the simcity, and from the
cosmopolis to the exopolis, the postmetropolis can take on many
forms. Drawing on Soja's constructions but also looking beyond his
work to other ways of conceptualizing the contemporary city, this
panel considers how cinema engages the new kinds of urban spaces and
experiences that have emerged as a consequence of globalization.
Papers addressing cinema and the postmetropolis in ways that relate
to the overall conference theme (mobilizing the future/screening the
past) are particularly welcome. Please visit the SCMS website for
more details about the 2009 conference : http://www.cmstudies.org/
