Society for Animation Studies Conference
San Francisco State University, October 6-9, 1994
The 6th annual SAS coference, hosted by the Cinema Dept. of
at San Francisco State University, will intersperse paper
presentations with filmmaker panels, teaching workshops and
rare film screenings.
Topics: The conference will focus on contemporary,
international and independent animation. Papers are
particularly sought on: 1) authorship studies (Asian or
European animators; neglected pioneers); 2) Genre
redefinition (e.g. new forms of animated documentary); 3)
Animation theory; comparative aesthetics of specific art
media; 4) Myth narratives and their source cultures;
fidelity to native art style; 5) Voices of feminism and
cultural diversity; 6) The role of international
organizations (Channel 4, NFBC, AFI, Cartoon, etc.); 7) Pop
culture from an international perspective; 8) Sound design
in modern animation; 9) Close analysis of selected films.
Fresh perspectives on traditional subjects are also welcome.
International participants are particularly encouraged to
analyze their regional styles, animators and studios. Papers
may be delivered in any language, but English translations
of the text should be prepared in time for distribution.
Format: A 250-500 word abstract should be submitted,
outlining the focus, methodology and conclusions of the
proposed paper.
Length of presentations: 20 minutes, including slide, film
and/or video illustrations. A limited number of longer time
slots will be allocated to guest animation directors and
scholars working on major projects.
Restrictions: Papers published prior to the conference
cannot be accepted.
Deadline: May 15, 1994. Later proposals will be considered,
but will be ineligible for financial aid if coming from the
US. The Selection Committee will review all proposals and
respond by June 10, 1994. Completed papers must be submitted
by August 31, 1994 to secure a place in the final program.
