SUMMARY:
This film focuses on some of the most difficult and
disturbing philosophical questions of our time. Chaim
Kovler, a Yiddish writer, is a deeply troubled man. Haunted
by the memories of the family and friends he lost during the
holocaust, he survives by writing poetry and having the
occasional one-night stand. In Montreal for a reading of
his work, he pays a visit to Mount Royal for a moment of
quiet reflection. There, he spots a group of orthodox Jews
celebrating Rosh Hashanah. To his amazement one of the
group is his old friend Hersh Rasseyner, who became his
bitter enemy when Chaim left the orthodox path. Hersh, a
pious and passionate descendent of an illustrious line of
rabbis, has survived along with his faith. Galvanized by
the suffering of his people, Hersh is more determined than
ever to shut out the world to protect Judaism. Chaim and
Hersh share tears of joy when they find each other, but
quickly slip into the quarrel that tore them apart 15 years
earlier. What ensues is the classic debate between the
religious and secular worlds. Through the course of the
film, which takes place in one day, they struggle with their
love and hate for each other in an attempt at
reconciliation. Finally, transcending their differences,
they share their personal stories and come to a new
understanding about themselves, their brotherhood, and the
issues that really separate them.
