The artist you are seeking is Giotto di Bondone, who lived in Italy from
1266-1337. In his 'Lives of the Artists', Vasari tells an anecdote of the
young Giotto being discovered by Cimabue who found him sketching on stones
while tending sheep for his father. You can easily find the reference in
Vasari.
