In addition to the many films mentioned by Tony Williams (as well as the
several sources cited by him and others), Howard Hawks' THE CRIMINAL CODE
(1931), with Walter Huston as the warden and Boris Karloff as one of the
inmates.  You might also be considering such films set in foreign prisons
and prison colonies? (PAPILLON, MIDNIGHT EXPRESS, THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER
KWAI, MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. LAWRENCE--as well as THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO--
all come to mind)
