There is a old movie cliche of men being initiated into a mentor relationship
with the purchase of new wardrobe. (RE: Malcom X, Harry in your Pocket [don't
laugh. it just came to mind.], Twins). This is usually accompanied by a
musical interlude of some sort.
 
I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for, might make for interesting
parallels with the whole Pretty Woman thing. Homoeroticism? Oedipal
Complexes? Paternalism?
