  The SCMS Middle East Caucus is sponsoring the 
following call for papers. Please send 
150-200-word proposal and brief bio statement by August 5th, 2008.

Proposals are sought for a panel on contemporary 
issues in Middle East film and media with 
particular emphasis on Egyptian, Lebanese, 
Syrian, Jordanian, Israeli, Palestinian, North 
African, Turkish, Iranian, Kurdish, and Central 
Asian cinemas.  In keeping with this year’s 
conference theme, “Mobilizing the 
Future/Screening the Past,” and the fortunate 
choice of Tokyo as the conference venue, a 
historical city in the vanguard not only for 
motion pictures, but for all types of visual 
media and technology, possible topics might 
include, but are not limited to the following:

·        Mobility, archives and screen culture (conference emphasis)
·        War cinema, documentary and archives
·        Cinematic travels, archiving and archeology of the Past
·        Archiving and cinematic witnessing
·        Resistance cinema and archives for the future
·        Cinematic archives, imaging the future
·        Archiving and cinematic temporality
·        Archives, eulogies, and critiques
·        Cinematic archives­Methodologies
·        Digital, television and celluloid archives
·        Archives, nationalism and trans-nationalism
·        Archiving Borders and the Diaspora
·        Digital media, video technology, archives of the Past and Future
·        Gender, archives, Past and Future
·        Cinematic archives­Infrastructures
·        Archiving the auteur, archiving the collective
·        Modernity, temporality and cinematic archives
·        Cinematic visuality, screen and spatial mobility
·        Urban mobility, cinematic spaces and the Future
·        Modernity, temporality and Mobility in Cinema
·        Mobilizing Borders and the Diaspora
·        Transnational/dialogic connections and 
influences between Japanese and Middle Eastern cinemas
·        Animation films in the Middle East and Japan
·        Great directors­Middle Eastern cinemas and Japanese cinema
·        Film Festivals and Film Markets in the Middle East and Japan
