Going by some informal research on my own (since I was too young to
experience this first-hand when the film came out), "2001", at least in
some parts of NC, was more of an acid trip film than a marijuana film.
 
One theatre in NC, for some time, ran a midnight showing of "2001" and
"Fantasia" as a double bill that became known as a good "trip" to the
locals.
