CFP: Anthology on John Sayles
John Sayles is considered a trailblazer of independent cinema in the U.S., yet
film scholars have devoted relatively little attention to his work. We are
seeking
manuscripts for an anthology on Sayles' filmmaking practice, using any
methodological approach -- e.g., authorship, aesthetic, narratological,
reception,
industrial, historical, ideological, or combinations thereof. We are
especially
interested in new scholarship, but are also open to revisions/updates of
previously
published material. Possible topics include, but are not limited, to:
Articulation of race, ethnicity, class, sexuality
Politics of locale and region
Role of performance and ensemble acting
Functions of storytelling and oral history
Music/sound practices
Reception studies, domestic or international
Sayles and the historical tradition of an "independent cinema" movement in
the US
Sayles' position within the contemporary motion picture and television
industries
Problematics of positioning Sayles' work as an aesthetic and ideological
alternative
to Hollywood model
