CFP: Dimensions of Animation: Redefining and Reconceptualizing Animation Aesthetics
This panel will explore animation aesthetics outside of “traditional” or narrowly defined accounts of animation. Theorists and artists within cinema and media studies have been expanding the definition of animation for decades, but what does this mean for analyzing animation aesthetics within specific media forms? This panel will address this question by analyzing instances where animation techniques and concepts have influenced different forms of media, such as live-action film and television, video games, advertisements, GIFs, software applications, etc. By combining theoretical and practical modes of analysis, this panel will offer insight into the relationship between animation concepts and practices and what it means to think of a particular aesthetic as an instance of animation. Such insights can help us map the complexity of our changing media environments and how we reuse and remediate ideas and practices.
Possible topics include (but are not limited to):
• Hybrid live-action and animated films
• Live-action adaptions of classic animated films
• Animation aesthetics in live-action films
• Painters and other artists who worked for animation studios/dabbled in animation
• Animated dramatizations and illustrations in educational films and documentaries
• Animation aesthetics/concepts in film theory
• Animation aesthetics/concepts in nonvisual media
We are seeking paper submissions for a pre-constituted panel at the 2018 SCMS conference in Toronto. Abstracts should be no longer than 2,500 characters and include a bibliography of up to five sources. Please include an author bio of no more than 500 characters. Deadline: Wednesday, August 16.
