HKU Department of Comparative Literature and Womens Studies Research Centre Launch "Hong Kong Women Filmmakers" Website

The HKU Department of Comparative Literature and Womens Studies Research Centre launched a groundbreaking website on Hong Kong women filmmakers on March 6, 2015. The website focuses on womens contributions to the Hong Kong film industry and film culture in the post-1997 period and situates their work against the backdrop of recent Hong Kong history and politics.

Hong Kong Women Filmmakers showcases the recent documentaries, short films and feature film of both established and emerging women directors, producers, and scriptwriters, including Ann Hui (SA), Mabel Cheung (), Clara Law (_׿), Tammy Cheung (), Carol Lai (ѩ), Barbara Wong (S), Yau Ching (ξ), Mak Yan Yan (), Ivy Ho (), Tsang Tsui Shan (ɺ), Louisa Wei (κr), Angie Chen (ꐰ), Heiward Mak (), and Emily Tang (ƕ԰), and many others.

At an event held to mark the launch, Professor Gina Marchetti from the Department of Comparative Literature, who initiated the project with the support of a grant from the Research Grants Council, explained, the aim of the website is to promote widespread interest in how Hong Kong women filmmakers contribute to local cinema as well as global film culture, particularly in their treatment of gender, sexuality, the family, and questions of changing identities.

The launch was timed to coincide with International Womens Day.

The new website can be viewed at: https://hkwomenfilmmakers.wordpress.com/
