The point about the source material of "Birth" being racist is an interesting
one. The books and plays by Rev. Thomas Dixon were considerably tamed down by
Griffith for "Birth". However, Griffith and Dixon were friends and shared
similar histories. And it was Dixon who reportedly told Griffith to change
the name of the film from "The Clansman" (its original title) to "The Birth
of a Nation".
