I don't know anything about music videos, but in the early days of
television there were occasional programs that exposed and celebrated
the artifice of making television. My guess is that it had much more to
do with playing around with the new toys than it did with any interest
in verfremdungseffekt. I remember a sunday night program in the mid
1950's billed by NBC as an "experiment." The show was called "Summer
Formal", I think, and the experiment was that the cameras and mike boom
were visible on the screen. The cameramen wore white dinner jackets.
Honest.
