Dan Gribbin writes:
"The version I viewed was indeed dubbed; I certainly hope that a subtitled
version will be available at some point. One reference to the film refers to
the protagonist's homosexuality. The scene from his youth which I presume
that reference to be based on seems to me to be full of ambiguities,
culminating in his shooting the chauffeur who takes him to his room. The
voice-over narration suggests the newness of the experience to the boy, but I
wasn't immediately impressed with his having discovered an alternate sexual
orientation at that time. I'm wondering if Bertolucci has ever referred to
this element of the film.
As for Trintignant, I am a major fan of "Un homme et une femme"; I enjoy
downplayed roles, and he seems to be the master at that, particularly in this
film. When I checked his filmography on Cinemania, I was amazed by the
number of Italian films in which he has appeared."
I don't recall exactly where it was, but I do remember that in an interview
Bertolucci made the rather facile comment that "Facists are homosexual," or
something to that effect. I think the comment appeared not too long after
the original release of the film.
ROUGE is now out at the art houses in limited release. Sounds worth seeing!
