In *The Aesthetics of Shadow: Lighting and Japanese Cinema,* Daisuke Miyao
reinterprets Japanese film history by exploring the "aesthetics of shadow"
in Japanese cinema in the first half of the twentieth century and treating
cinematographers and lighting designers as essential collaborators in
moviemaking.
