Yes, but actually it thrives on the confrontational moments between the
participants. The producers' inclusion, in both seasons, of
one person from outside of New York/Los Angeles (one from Alabama, one from
Kentucky) was an obvious attempt to provoke cultural clashes.
Without the confrontations the program would have had no conflict to
capitalize on.

I think that's where I saw a description of the REEL WORLD (first season)
trip to Jamaica where they were almost assaulted for videotaping a
reggae performance--footage that never made it to MTV.
And there's a short piece in TV GUIDE (5/23/92) on the first season:
"A Slice of Reel Life." It's lightweight criticism, of course, but it
provides some background information.
