It's a medieval celebration that still goes on at the end of the grape
harvest in the region.  The dregs of the wine-pressings are filling the
bathtubs and the ritual supposedly honors the wine gods.  You'll find the
details and references in my _Creative Encounters with French Films_, Varda
chapter (Mellen Press 1993).
