The best film of 1993 was In The Valley Of Aberham by Manuel De Olivera.
Like most great films it doesn't even have a distributer in the US. It is
by far the best film adaptation of Madame Bovary yet made. The
cinematography is the best I've ever seen. Each image is composed so that
it is saturated with a painterly beauty that makes the film's narrative,
though quite straight forward, hard to attend to upon first viewing. Every
image and every color within every image is burstuing with overdetermined
signification.
