Emilie Altenloh received her PhD. for a dissertation, Zur Soziologie des
Kino. Die Kino- Unternehmung und die sozialen Schichten ihrer Besucher, in 1913
(published Jena, 1914). Translated by Kathleen Cross and published in Screen in
2001.
After World War II she became a member of the German Bundestag under her
married name, Emilie-Kiep-Altenloh, and in 1979 a Foundation was named in her
honor in Hamburg.
According to German sources, this is the first film dissertation world-wide.
