The following announcement may be of interest to members of this list:

CALL FOR PAPERS, PANELS, AND PRESENTATIONS

The International Conference on Violence in the Media (October 3 -
4, 1994 Hilton Hotel New York City) will explore and identify the
relationship between the media and how it impacts on violence in
society. It will bring together media professionals, government
officials and academics from around the world, in many disciplines,
such as psychology, sociology, criminal justice, communications,
journalism, health care, etc.

To participate, submit a 250-word abstract of your proposal for a
paper, panel or presentation, accompanied by a one-page vitae, by
March 1, 1994.

Special consideration will be given to those efforts that take a
critical perspective of the issues, and are concerned with offering
alternatives to violence in the media, the First Amendment issues
that are involved, and constructive ways to deal with the
"identification hypothesis" of how young people identify with
glamorized aggressive personalties, how they imitate aggressive
behavior expressed in the media, and how it desensitizes them to
the consequences of violence.

The proceedings of the Conference will be televised and the papers
and panels published. For further information and a list of
suggested themes, contact the Conference Chairman:
