Roger Corman's statement in the 70s that B movies disappeared once the major
studios started picking up the staples of the drive-in movie may be pertinent
here. But I'd like to add this additional suggestion. Given the significance
of the "Series" format to so many B films (think of Maisie, Blondie, Charlie
Chan, etc..., most of whom would be seen in as many as four films a year...))
, isn't it fair to assume that B movies satisfied a desire for familiar
characters, situations, etc. that was eventually replaced by television?
