There are still one or two spaces available in the "Media and Culture in
Ireland" Program. The Communication Department and the English
Department at Northern Illinois University are again this year
conducting the four week summer program at Dublin City University from
June 22 to July 18. In its sixth year, the program focuses on Ireland's
struggle to define its own cultural identity (pre-modern, post-modern,
post-colonial) in a world of American and British media domination.
Students learn about Irish social and economic history and literary
traditions as a backdrop to understanding Ireland's development of a
modern, indigenous media industry--with intensive screenings of
historical and contemporary Irish films both at the university and at
the Irish Film Centre. Irish media artists like Jim Sheridan, media
critics like Michael Dwyer, and academic scholars like Luke Gibbons
present guest lectures in addition to lectures by NIU faculty Jeff Chown
and Robert Self. More information is availabe at the program's web site:

Anyone interested should contact Bob Self ([log in to unmask] 0r
815-895-3238) right away.
