In response to Jay Ruby's request for use of documentary or
documentary-style footage in fiction films -
This semester I've been teaching a course on PostWar European films,
which are rife with documentary-looking footage.
Starting with the Italian Neo-Realist "The Bicycle Thief" with lots of
Rome street scenes, street scenes in French New Wave (e.g., "400
Blows"), look at Werner Herzog's work in German Neue Kino ("Aguirre:
The Wrath of God" enacts a trip down a river in South America) and
Tony Richardson's "Tom Jones," for lots of shakey-camera, swish pans,
all that sixties era stuff.
Cheers,
