...or, more accurately, growing pains of the University of Alabama's
computer system--where SCREEN-L is housed.
You may have noticed that yesterday (Thursday, 2/9) there were no
SCREEN-L messages. There were plenty waiting to go out, but I couldn't
get to them because I couldn't get through, via dial-up, to
UA's computer. After letting my modem dial for 35 minutes, I gave up.
Ah, for those lazy, pastoral days when SCREEN-L was born! Back in
1991 there was never a busy signal. Ah....
<snapping back to the present>
User demand has outpaced UA's computer resources, which may result
in occasional aberrant behavior for SCREEN-L.
This is just a note to let all SCREEN-Litarians know what's up when
a day or two might pass with no SCREEN-L messages (or digest). Usually
it's just a bit of a traffic snarl on the Infobahn.
For the most part SCREEN-L has been served excellently by UA--which
distributes and then stores all of the thousands of SCREEN-L messages
at no charge. If UA1VM (UA's mainframe computer) had a back, I'd
give it a little pat right now...
P.S. SCREEN-L membership is now over 700! Thanks, everyone, for
participating!
