The Department of Communication at the University of
Massachusetts/Amherst invites applications for two tenure-track
Assistant Professor positions with responsibilities for teaching and
directing student research at undergraduate and graduate levels.
 
POSITION ONE:  FILM STUDIES
 
We seek a scholar whose research and teaching interests/expertise will
include one or more of the following: representation and identity;
national or indigenous cinema; systems of film production and
reception; rhetorical dimensions of film. Ability to teach
undergraduate introductory film production is desirable.
 
 
POSITION TWO:  MASS COMMUNICATION THEORY & RESEARCH /
               MEDIA INFLUENCE
 
We seek a scholar pursuing an active program of empirical research on
issues relating to the role of television and/or new media in the lives
of children, adolescents, families, and/or other social groups. Areas
of emphasis may include media content patterns, media use and child
development, or media impacts. Ability to teach quantitative research
methods at the graduate level is desirable.
 
 
The Department is located in the College of Social and Behavioral
Sciences and offers BA, MA, and PhD programs on a multi-cultural
campus. Completed PhD required for Sept. 1, 1999 appointment.
Excellence in teaching (at all levels of the curriculum, from large
undergraduate lectures to advanced graduate seminars), and evidence of
scholarly promise expected.  Salary is competitive. The positions are
contingent upon funding.

curriculum vita, three letters of reference, and one article-length
