Also in response to Pamela Robertson's interest in recording technology,
but maybe a little afield:
At some point in the 90s it started to become mandatory that any "chick
flick" feature a girl group sing along. I don't recall the first
non-musical to burst into this kind of pop singing, but following are a
few titles that do. (These films seem to equate girl self-esteem with the
ability to be, however briefly, a Supreme or Marvelette.)
Mermaids -- with Cher and Winona Ryder
The First Wives Club -- with Diane Keaton, Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn (and
also one of the most gratuitous and ill-fitting)
Hope Floats -- with Gena Rowlands, Sandra Bullock
My Best Friend's Wedding -- with Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz (an entire
seafood restaurant breaks into Say A Little Prayer in a funny, I bet,
spoof- rendition of this type of grrl singing power)
I'm sure there are more, but I don't know how to account for it. Is it
from The Big Chill dish-washing scene? Grease?
